Please follow all of the steps within this guide if you would like to update your Zebra TC-21 devices to Android 13.
Before you begin, make sure all of the devices you are updating are fully
charged and connected to the internet. Please note that following these steps will factory reset the device and will require you to follow a separate guide to add the device back onto our Mobile Device Management system.
1) Locate the serial numbers of all the devices you are updating. You can find
this either on the MCM app, or by going to MCM Device Settings, clicking the
button on the middle-right side of the screen, and going to “Model and
Hardware”. The serial number is listed on that page.
2) Once you have the serial numbers, contact our support team via the Support Widget and click on Send us a Message, or provide them to the support team member you are currently speaking to in a live chat. Let them know that you need the devices unlocking in order to update the firmware, and list the serial numbers.
3) Once unlocked, swipe up on the device, and locate the StageNow app on the
list of apps.
If you cannot see StageNow on the list of apps, please contact our support
team or let the team member you are currently speaking to know, and they will fix this.
4) Point the scanner (top edge of the device) towards the update QR code below, then press and hold the scan button (left edge, blue button)
until you hear the device beep, or the scanner turns off.
If the scanner will not pick up the QR code, try the following methods;
• Move the device around (while still pointing the scanner at the QR code), to
get a different angle
• Set your screen brightness to the maximum level.
• Print a copy of this page and scan it from that.
5) Once the scan is complete, you can leave the device to update, as it requires
no further input until the update is completed.
6) The device will go through a few stages, as seen below. Once it is done, the
device will factory reset, and reboot on the new Android version.
During the process, it is possible for the update to fail, at which point a box will
appear, asking if you would like to check the logs. Click “no” and start again
from step 4. This typically happens due to a drop in WiFi connection.
7) When the device returns to the factory default settings (screen looks like below) contact our support again. Inform them that you are rebuilding your handset, and that you require the QR Code. Then follow the MDM setup guide from the next page.
8) Once you are on the above screen, DO NOT PRESS START. Inform the member of the support team you are speaking to that you have completed all the steps and are on the Welcome screen. You will then be provided with a separate guide and QR code which will explain how to rebuild your device onto our Mobile Device Management system.
