Setting up a Mobile Hotspot on Personal Device

Connecting a device to a mobile hotspot

This can also be known as a Personal Hotspot. This is a dedicated wireless access point typically set up on your personal smart phone. It allows you to create a network connection that can be connected to by other devices. This will use your own phones cellular data connection to access the internet.

If you have a handset Wi-Fi issue on the device, connecting to a Mobile Hotspot will indicate whether the underlying issue could be caused by your Wi-Fi within the home or the handheld device. If your device connects to the hotspot on your personal phone, this generally indicates that the cause of the Wi-Fi issues is from the Wi-Fi within the home itself. In this instance we would generally recommend you contacting your Internet Service Provider if no other trouble shooting steps have resolved the issue.

Mobile Hotspot Instructions:

Please note these instructions with vary depending on the device you are using. These instructions are for guidance only:

On Android

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Navigate to Network & Internet or Connections (depending on your device).

  3. Select Hotspot & Tethering or Portable Hotspot.

  4. Tap Wi-Fi Hotspot and toggle it On.

  5. Configure the Hotspot name, Password, and other settings if needed.

On iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap Cellular and then Personal Hotspot.

  3. Toggle Allow Others to Join to On.

  4. Set or verify the Wi-Fi password under the Wi-Fi Password section.

Once you have switched on the mobile hotspot on your personal device, you can then follow the below instructions to set up a connection on the handheld device having Wi-Fi issues. The name of your Mobile Hotspot will appear similar to name of your homes Wi-Fi:
